5 reasons to join a Mastermind group

What is it?

Napoleon Hill (Author, Journalist, Lecturer) created the concept of Masterminds around 75 years ago with his book, Think and Grow Rich. He wrote about the mastermind group principle as: “The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.”

I’ve participated in a few different mastermind groups, from small to large groups, offered online and in-person. I’ve learned from my experiences and have realized some great benefits too.

“You can be anything you want to be, if only you believe with sufficient conviction and act in accordance with your faith; for whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.” – Napoleon Hillhands-people-woman-working

We’re still early in 2016 and some people may have already abandoned their new year’s resolutions while others are happily working towards their goals. I personally don’t believe in setting new year’s resolutions as they feel too firm and black and white, rather I set intentions which I believe are more favourable to something I’m aiming for – something that involves small steps or a plan.

When I share my intentions or plans in a group it gives me that extra push to step up and do what I say I’m going to do, which also allows me to share my successes with the same group when my desired outcome is realized.

Here’s the top 5 things I love about mastermind groups:

#1. You get to be a part of a community of like-minded individuals

We’re all connected in one way or another and the people in the mastermind group often share similar values. When you join a group with a purpose you benefit from each other’s support and encouragement. Often the community connections lead to friendship and extend after the mastermind meetings have ended.

#2. You will learn to stretch your boundaries

When you’re surrounded by amazing people doing amazing things, it inspires you to think and be different and to step outside of your comfort zone to stretch your boundaries further than you might otherwise do on your own.

#3. You will learn a lot about yourself through others

Relationships are mirrors in life. When you are exposed to another person’s experience and point of view, you get to see your own situation in a new light. You may not agree with everything that is offered however it may encourage you to consider alternate ways of responding or different ways of being when it comes to your own situation or goals.

#4. You will be held accountable for what you desire to achieve

As mentioned, when you share your intentions and goals with the mastermind group it encourages you to stick to your plan to get there. In one of the groups I participated in each week we reported on our progress from the prior session and set a new goal to accomplish by the next session. It felt really good to have the support of the group and to celebrate each small success in my plan.

#5. You get to enjoy watching others succeed

You’ve heard the saying ‘the more you give, the more you receive,’ right? When you offer your time and commitment to others to help them succeed, you are coming from a place of expansion and the energy will find a way to circulate back to you in one way or another at the perfect time. There is great satisfaction in observing when someone is happy and has accomplished their goals knowing that you were a part of their journey.

When we work together to navigate life’s challenges we can lean on each other, strengthen our connections and hold each other accountable, creating greater conditions for success than if we were to go it alone.
