5 layers of self – manomaya kosha

We’re going bigger and exploring a deeper level when it comes to the third layer of self – manomaya kosha.

The third kosha is all about the mind. The mind consists of three levels; conscious, subconscious and unconscious. This kosha also contains the intellect and ego.

If you’re like many people you may have noticed that your mind is very busy, but surprisingly it can only do one thing at a time. It processes information so quickly that it might seem like it’s capable of multi-tasking. The subconscious mind is there to take the overflow, especially when the conscious mind can’t make a decision. Think of all your unfinished business or actions collecting in your subconscious!

How do you clear this? Meditation opens the door to the subconscious mind to bring the unfinished business back to the surface. The ego can make excuses and will try to convince you to leave that ‘stuff’ alone. Having a regular meditation practice, even for a few minutes a day, helps to settle the conscious mind and allows the subconscious mind to reveal the stuff (stories or karmic patterns) to be released. Over time the release will bring more lightness to your being.

Try this exercise:
To help strengthen your subconscious mind, for one day, pay attention to your decision making process. When you are asked to make a choice, do you have a clear ‘yes’ or clear ‘no’, or do you often ponder and sway between ‘yes, no, and maybe?’ Do you change your mind frequently and wonder ‘what if?’  The more time you spend changing your mind and wondering what could have or should have been, the more you are cluttering your subconscious mind. Therefore you are spending less time living in the present moment. Practice listening to your gut and go with the first answer that feels right then stick to it.
